How do I set Dish Network Recording Preferences with Dual-Tuner Receivers?

Dish Network Dual-tuner DVR receivers provide flexible viewing and recording options. To learn how to best set up the receiver, see which scenario below describes your viewing situation.

Scenario 1:  “I only have the receiver connected to one television.”
Your best set up choice is Single Mode. With Single Mode, you can use Picture-in-Picture, Record a show while watching a different live show or Record two shows while watching a pre-recorded show.

Scenario 2: “I want to watch different things on two different televisions.”
Your best set up choice is Dual Mode with Record Plus disabled. In this scenario you can Watch something different than the person in the other room, Record something different than the person in the other room, While recording, watch what you want from the My Recordings List or Watch all recordings from either location.

Scenario 3: “I watch most of my shows on the TV with the receiver next to it (TV1). I sometimes watch the other TV (TV2), but not too often.”
Your best set up choice is Dual Mode with Record Plus enabled on TV2. This will allow you to tell the receiver to make recordings in the room you don’t use very often (TV2), so you can either watch a live show or record a second show in the main room (TV1) or Watch all recordings from either location.

Scenario 4: “I watch most of my shows on the TV that doesn’t have the receiver nearby (TV2). I sometimes watch the TV with the receiver next to it (TV1), but not too often.”
Your best set up choice is Dual Mode with Record Plus enabled on TV1. With this setup you can tell the receiver to make recordings in the room you don’t use very often (TV1), so you can either watch a live show or record a second show in the room you usually use (TV2) or watch all recordings from either location.

A few Recording Preference Tips:

  • To change between Single Mode and Dual Mode, press the MODE button on the front of the satellite receiver.
  • To enable or disable Record Plus and set the TV location you prefer to make recordings on first, open the Main Menu, select Preferences, then select Record Plus. Choose the TV location (TV1 or TV2) that you do not typically watch, so that the main viewing location is free to watch or record something different.
  • It’s best to make your Record Plus TV preference once, then leave it alone. If you change it back and forth between TV1 and TV2, you may lose some of your recordings due to conflicts.
  • In Dual Mode with Record Plus enabled, set up future DVR timers at the TV location you did not pick in the Record Plus setting – this will ensure a lower chance of recording conflicts.
  • If TV2 is set as your Record Plus location, then set up future DVR timers at the TV1 location (using the TV1 green tab remote control). The first timer uses TV2; if there is another DVR timer set for the same time, the receiver will use TV1.
